a) What is fossil?
Ans:- Fossils are the remains or
impressions of a very old plant, animal or human that have been turned into
stone. These are often embedded in the rock and thus preserved for millions of
years.
b) Who was Nabonidus?
Ans:- Nabonidus was the last king of the
Neo-Baby Lonian Empire.
c) Which period in history is known as Hellenic period?
Ans:- The Greek period includes the
period of Mediterranean history between the death of Alexander the Great in 323
BC and the rise of the Roman Empire.
d) Who were called papyrologist?
Ans:- 'Papyrus' was a reed-like plant
that grew on the banks of the Nile in Egypt and was processed to produce a
writing material that was very widely used in everyday life. Thousands of
contracts, accounts, letters and official documents survive on 'papyrus' and
have been published by scholars known as 'papirologists'.
e) Who was Augustus?
Ans:- Augustus was a Roman state man and
military leader who served as the first emperor of the Roman Empire.
f) Name the author of Natural History.
Ans:- Pliny the Elder.
g) Who was the author of Feudal Society?
Ans:- March Bloc.
h) Name the two followers of Luther who popularized the Lutherism in
Switzerland.
Ans:- (i) Ulrich Zwingli, (ii) John
Calvin.
i) How did the Aztecs reclaim their lands?
Ans: The Aztecs adapted their
surroundings in a number of ways, including floating gardens, canoeing and
building dikes to enable agricultural production on the water's surface. The
Aztecs lived in the marshy and moist environment around Lake Texcoco, which is
located in the Valley of Mexico. The Aztecs faced obstacles specific to their
environment, such as frequent floods, which required some adaptation to allow
the Aztecs to survive and even thrive.
j) Name two paintings of Leonardo da Vinci.
Ans:- Monalisa and Last supper.
k) Who invented the Flying Shuttle Loom?
Ans:- John key.
l) What was the ancient name of the present Tokyo?
Ans:- Edo.
2. Answer the following questions in brief: 2x12=24
a) Where is Altamira and why is it famous for?
Ans:- The paintings on the ceiling of
the cave were first brought to the notice of Marcelino Sanj of Sautola, a local
landowner.
b) What does Australopithecus mean? Mention one characteristic of
Australopithecus.
Ans:- A fossil bipedal primate with both
ape and human characteristics found in Pliocene and lower Pleistocene deposits
in Africa.
Australopithecus had both more human characteristics. Members of
this species had a flat nose in ape-like facial proportions, a strongly
protruding lower jaw and a small brain with musculature and strong hands with
curved fingers.
c) Mention two important sources for writing history of the Central
Islamic Lands.
Ans: There are two important sources for
writing the history of the Central Islamic Lands:
(i) Semi-historical works, such as biographies, records of the
sayings and actions of the Prophet and commentaries on the Quran.
(ii) The Christian histories written in Syriac are brief but they
throw interesting light on the early history of Islam.
d) What was ‘Dressel 20’? Why was it used?
Ans:- The Dressel 20 is a larger global
version, with two handles and a thicker rounded or angular rim, concave
internally. A distinctive 'plug' of clay seals the base of the vessels. Spanish
olive oil of the period 140–160 was mainly transported in Dressel 20.
e) Who built the ‘Dome of Rock’? Mention an important feature of it.
Ans:- "The Dome of Rock" was
built by Abd-al-Malik. It was the earliest major work of Islamic architecture.
It is built on top of a rocky mound.
f) What were the two famous monasteries established by St. Benedict?
Ans:- (i) Monastery of Subiaco in Italy.
(ii) Abbey of Monte Casino.
g) What was Indulgence?
Ans: - In the teaching of the Roman
Catholic Church, indulgence is "a way of reducing the amount of punishment
for sins." This can reduce the "temporary punishment for sin"
after death, in the state or the process of purification known as purification.
