Ans: Franz found that the school was unusually quiet that morning. Everything was as calm as a Sunday morning.

Ans: The river described in 'The Last Lesson' is Saar.

(7) For how long did M. Hemal teach in his school?

Ans: M. Hemal taught in his school for forty years.

(8) What did M. Hemal say to the students sitting on his chair?

Ans: Climbing into his chair, M. Hamel told his students that he would give them his last lesson.

Ans: The 'big trouble with Elsa' was that she put off learning until the next day.

Ans: The lesson was called the 'Last Lesson' because it was the last French lesson in school. From the next day only, German would be taught in that school.

(15) What was Franz very afraid of?

Ans: Franz was very afraid of being scolded.

(17) What is a participle in English grammar?

Ans: In English grammar, a particle is a word that is partly a verb and partly an adjective.

Ans: (i) Examples of present participle: The person carrying the bottles is my brother.

Past participle: He had relied on the commotion to get to his desk.

(ii) Examples of participial adjectives in English: School can be tiring for young children.

(19) "I had counted on the commotion to come to my desk without even looking." In the above sentence, replace the underlined word with an equivalent word.

Ans: I had planned to go to my desk without looking.

(20) 'You can imagine how I blushed and how frightened I was", Why did little Franz blush?

Ans: Little Franz was embarrassed because everyone in the class noticed him for being late.

(21) What a thunderbolt these words were to me!'

(i) What is thunderbolt?

(ii) Write one more sentence to express the same idea.

Ans: (i) Here 'thunderclap' refers to unexpected news, i.e., the order from Berlin to teach only German language in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine.

(ii) What an unexpected and startling news it was!

(22) 'Oh, you wretch'. Who were the unfortunate ones? Give another word for 'poor'.

Ans: The Germans who ordered German instead of French to be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine were despicable. Another word for 'worthless' is "villain" or "shameful".

(23) How did M. Hamel want to 'honor' his 'last lesson'?

Ans: To 'honor' his 'last lesson', M. Hamel put on his nice Sunday clothes.

(24) What would I not give to be able to say that terrible rule for the participle .... Why is the rule of the participle described by Franz as 'terrible'?

Ans: The rule of participles was described by Franz as "dreadful" because he did not know a word about participles and Mr. Hamel was about to ask him about the rules of the participle.

(25) 'Not even the smallest children who did the right thing to find their fishing hooks...? What is fish hook?

Ans: A fish hook is a sharp metal hook used to catch fish. It has a point that curves towards the back making it difficult to take out.

(26) What is 'Angelus'?

Ans: Angelus means prayer service at dawn, noon and sunset.
