(1) What news
has been displayed on the bulletin board for the past two years in "The
Last Lesson"?
Ans: For
the past two years, all bad news, such as news of lost battles, drafts and
orders from the commanding officer, was displayed on the bulletin board of the
town hall.
(2) Why did
the blacksmith watcher tell Franz not to go to school early?
Ans:
Wachter, the blacksmith, told Franz not to rush because he had read the news
bulletin and knew that Franz would have plenty of time that morning.
(3) Why was
Franz M. Hamel surprised to see him that particular morning when he was late?
Ans:
Franz was surprised to see his teacher, M. Hamel, in his handsome green coat,
frilled shirt and embroidered black silk, which he never wore except on
inspection and prize days.
(4) What did Franz love to do instead of learning his lessons? Exam paper - 2019
Ans:
Franz was never eager to learn his lesson. Instead of learning, he preferred to
hunt for birds' eggs or to slide down the Saar River.

ridiculous. This reflects Franz's sense of rebellion against the unjust German
order.

Franz's feelings about M. Hamel and the school changed completely when he
learned that M. Hamel was about to give his last French lesson. He was now
filled with remorse for his previous neglect of his studies. The thought that
M. Hamel would be going away and would never see him again made him forget all
about his ruler and what a freak he was.

Ans:
Arriving late at school, he anticipated the general commotion caused by opening

Ans:
Little Franz is the speaker here. He anticipated that Mr. M. Hemal would
reprimand him for coming late for school but nothing happened as Mr. M. Hemal
was very kind to him.
(13) Why do
you think Hauser's primer was 'thumbed at the edges'?
Ans:
Hauser's primer was "patched at the edges because the order from Berlin
was ridiculous to him. Therefore, the edges of the primer were thumb-dirty to
show rebellion against the order and his love for his mother tongue.
(14) Was M.
Hamel's manner of speaking different on the day of the last lesson? if so, how?
Ans: Yes.
On the day of the last lesson, M. Hamel's manner of speaking was different. He
was very polite while teaching and did not scold them for not learning their
lessons. He taught the students with great patience and care. He wanted to pass
on everything he knew about the French language to his students.
(15) How does
Franz feel about his books, French grammar and the history of France? Why?
Ans:
Regarding his books, Franz realized that his books which had previously seemed
a nuisance, were heavy to carry, were his old friends and he could not leave
them. He felt this because M. Hamel pointed out that this was his last French
lesson and Franz realized that he had not learned anything yet. Now his desire
to learn suddenly awakened.
(16) Why were
the old men of the village sitting at the back of the room?
Ans: The
old men of the village sat at the back of the room to pay homage to their
mother tongue, French. Apart from this, he also wanted to show respect to M.
Hemal, who had been serving him with sincerity and dedication for the last
forty years.
(17) 'Then the
children chanted their ba, bi, bi, bo, boo.......?

Ans: (i)

Ans: The
