Ans:
Arriving late at the school, Franz noticed that the school was unusually quiet
and peaceful. There was no general commotion from the opening and closing of
desks, the teacher's ruler banging on the table and the chanting of lessons in
unison. Franz was surprised to see that M. Hamel was wearing his beautiful
green coat, frilled shirt and embroidered black silk hat, which he never wore
except on inspection or award days. What surprised Franz most was the presence
of the villagers, who sat quietly on the back benches like students. These

Ans:
Berlin ordered that all schools in Alsace and Lorraine be taught only German.
The order greatly hurt the people of the area as they were all French. The
biggest impact of this was on the school teacher M. Hamel and his students. M.
Hamel had to leave the school he had taught for the last forty years. Their
students should be denied the right to learn French, their mother tongue.
(3) How did
the people of Alsace and Lorraine honor M. Hamel on his last day at school?
Ans: The
people of Alsace and Lorraine paid tribute to M. Hamel who taught at school for
forty years by attending class with his students on their last day at school.
Everyone loved M
Hamel in Alsace. The last day was very emotional for Hemal and the students.
M. Hamel worked
tirelessly and with great insight for forty years in the Alsatian school. On
the last day of school, the citizens of Alsace thus returned their respect.
The back benches
of the school, which were usually empty, were occupied by villagers, including
