(1) How was the land of apples?

Ans: The Land of Apples was a very cold place in which the ground was covered, and the trees were bare.

(2) What were those different sounds that seemed to bother little Zitkala-Sa?

Ans: The distinct sounds that bothered little Zitkala-Sa were the clatter of shoes on the bare floor and the rumbling noise produced by many voices muttering an unknown tongue.

(3) Who was marched into the dining room?

Ans: Red Indian girls were taken to the dining room.

(4) What was Zitkala-Sa idea regarding short, shingled hair?       Exam paper - 2017

Ans: Zitkala-Sa’s idea of short, shimmering hair was that short hair was worn by mourners and short hair was worn by cowards.

(5) What was Zitkala-Sa's immediate reaction to the cutting of her hair?     Exam paper - 2018

Ans: Zitkala-Sa’s immediate reaction to the hair cut was one of deep anguish and she felt like an animal driven by a shepherd.

(6) Why was Annan not happy with Bama's story?

Ans: Annan was not happy with Bama's story because he did not find it funny. He knew why the man had tied the packet to its string. This was because the man belonged to a lower caste and was not supposed to touch the food packet that would be eaten by the upper caste landlord.

(7) 'Because he scattered four coins together....' What was the reason for Bama's anger?

Ans: The reason for this resentment of Bama was that he felt that these upper caste people had lost all their human feelings because they were rich.

(8) When did Bama experience untouchability?    Exam paper - 2013, 2017

Ans: Bama experienced untouchability when one day he saw an elderly man in his street carrying a packet of vadai without touching it and bowing respectfully handed it over to the landlord. He found this amusing until his brother explained that it was because they were of a lower caste and would not touch the food consumed by upper caste people. Thus, he came to know that the lower caste people are considered untouchables by the upper caste people...

(9) Why did Bama feel so sad and angry?

Ans: When Bama came to know from his brother why the old lady in their street used to take the vadai packets from her string, he felt very sad. He found the whole idea of untouchability quite abhorrent. She felt so agitated and angry that she wanted to touch those wretched plaintiffs directly.

(10) What did Annan say about his community to the narrator?  Exam paper - 2018

Ans: When Bama told his brother Annan about a funny incident that an old man from their street was carrying a packet of vadai by its string, the latter explained that there was nothing wrong with carrying the packet like that. Wasn't strange as they were of lower caste and hence shouldn't be touched. If they did, they would be polluted. That's why the man was holding the packet by its string.

(11) How was the narrator inspired by the words of his elder brother Annan?

Ans: The narrator of the story, Bama, was inspired by the words of his brother Annan. He told her that because he was born in a lower caste community, he was never given any respect, dignity or respect. He suggested that only by studying hard and making progress could they overcome these humiliations. If they can surpass these upper caste people in studies, then only they will give them proper recognition. These words inspired her so much that she studied diligently and always stood first in her class.
