MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD
Solved questions for 5 mark each:
(A) LONG
ANSWER:
(1) Describe
how Zitkala-Sa tried in vain to save her hair from being cut. Why did she want
to save her hair? Exam paper - 2019
Ans: On
her first day in the Land of Apples, Zitkala-Sa received terrible news from her
friend Judwin that her long, heavy hair would fall out. In their community,
short hair was worn only by mourners and cowards to shake their hair.
Therefore, like her friend Judwin, she was unwilling to accept such humiliation
without a fight. Trying to save her hair, she quietly and stealthily climbed
the stairs and hid there under a bed in a large empty room. But he was soon
found and pulled out from under the bed. He tried to resist being taken down by
kicking and scratching wildly. But all was in vain as she was tied to a chair.
She was crying and shaking her head until she felt the cold blades of scissors
on the back of her neck. When his long hair shimmered like cowards, he felt
like a helpless animal being led by a shepherd.
(2) What
interesting sights caught Bama's attention on his way home from school?
Ans: Bama
always walked leisurely home from school, enjoying the changing views and
scenes of the streets and the market place. Sometimes it was the performing
monkey and sometimes it was the snake charmer who attracted him. For his charms
were many and varied; Like a cyclist pedaling non-stop or a street play, or a
puppet show or a "no magic, no miracle" stunt performance. Even the
huge bell of the Mariata temple, the Pongal cooked in front of the temple, the
dry fish stall near the Gandhi statue and so on attracted him. She also stopped
to watch political parties set up the stage for their meetings, or a gypsy with
her lemur in a cage selling needles or some other thing. He also liked to watch
the waiter in a coffee shop chilling his coffee or some people chopping onions
in a strange way. Due to all these scenes, she stopped on the way and got late
in returning home.
(3) How did
the fun incident that Bama witnessed on the way home suddenly turn into one of
deep sadness?
Ans: One
day while coming from school, Bama saw a barn near his street where the
zamindar was watching the proceedings sitting on a piece of sacking. He saw an
old man from his street coming from the market with a packet of vadai or green
banana bhajji and holding it by its string. He went straight to the landlord
and handed over the packet while bowing respectfully. The landlord opened the
packet and started eating the vadas.
He found the
incident quite amusing and told it to his elder brother Annan. She told him
that the man was not funny at all carrying the packet like that. The person
belonged to a lower caste and therefore should not touch the landlord or the
food eaten by him. If he did, it would be polluted. When he heard this, he felt
very sad. Also, she got so angry that she wanted to touch those poor wadis
directly.
