1. Who was Dr. Sadao Hoki?

Ans: A Japanese doctor who studied medicine in America and later returned to Japan.

2. Who was Hana?   Exam paper - 2019

Ans: Dr. Sadao's wife, Hana, was Japanese. The two met in America, became friends and got legally married there. It is unlikely that Hana was a medical student.

3. Who was Sadao's father?

Ans: A true, stern Japanese, blind patriot. He did not allow any foreign object to enter the house.

4. Who was the old general?

Ans: The general of Japan was Sadao's patient: he was a cruel man in his prime years.

5. Who was Tom?

Ans: An American soldier who came ashore near Sadao's house after being seriously wounded. Tom was treated by Sadao.

6. Who was Yumi?

Ans: Sadao's maid, in charge of the children. She was attached to the children.

7. Write about Mali?

Ans: Sadao's gardener, an old man in service since Sadao's father's time.

8. Who was the cook?

Ans: Sadao's cook, an old man, has been in service since the time of Sadao's father.

9. Who was the officer?

Ans: General's messenger.

10. What was the main concern of Dr. Sadao's father?

Ans: Dr. Sadao's father's main concern was his education. So, he was sent to America at the age of 22 to learn medicine and surgery. He practiced there for 8 years and came back in 30 years.

11. Why was Dr. Sadao not sent with the army?

Ans: Dr. Sadao was never sent with the soldiers because he was the only surgeon the general trusted. In addition, he was completing a quest that would completely heal the wounds.

12. What did Hana notice coming out of the mist?    Exam paper - 2019

Ans: Hana was the wife of Dr. Sadao. He saw a man staggering and staggering on his toes. On reaching there both of them (Hana and Dr. Sadao) found that the man was a P.O.W who was bleeding from his back.

13. What did Hana want from Dr. Sadao after seeing the P.O.W.?

Ans: Brave and courageous, who fought victoriously in Manchuria but merciless, inhuman, cruel: beat his wife.

16. Why did the servants leave Mr. Sadao's house?

Ans: They did not want to help Dr. Sadao to protect the enemy and show their disapproval of their action.

17. Why did the general spare the American soldier?

Ans: The general spared the American soldier because he was a selfish 'man'. He thought of nothing but his life. He needed Sadao for himself. The operation took place and in pain he forgot his promise.

18. Hana's apprehensions turned out to be false when the messenger arrived. How?

Ans: Hana thought that the servants had informed the police officers about their harboring the enemy and that messengers had come to arrest them. But messengers came to inform Sadao that the general was again in pain and needed care.

19. Why did Hana herself have to wash the wounded man?

Ans: Hana had to wash the wounded man herself because her servants and even her maid refused to wash an enemy American because of superstition and fear.

20. "You gutted me." Why did the P.O.W make this statement?

Ans: The P.O.W made this statement when the operation was going on. He felt that Dr. Sadao had taken out his intestines while operating on him. But later he was proved wrong.

21. Mali was a superstitious person. do you agree?

Ans: Yes, we believe that the gardener was a superstitious person. He thought that if Doctor Sadao tried to save his life, the bullet, the rock and the sea would take revenge because they all wanted to kill him.

22. How did Hana predict that all the prisoners were mistreated by the Japanese army?

Ans: Hana was aware of the cruel nature of the general who used to beat his own wife after getting drunk. She knew that if a man can beat his own wife, then how can he spare such prisoners who are a danger to his country.

23. "The general was in the palm of Dr. Sadao's hands." do you agree?

Ans: Yes, we agree that the general was in Dr. Sadao S's palm as he was the only one who could save his life. Furthermore, the general never trusted the German surgeons as they would consider the operation a success if he died during the operation.

24. What did the General assure Dr. Sadao to do?

Ans: The General assured Dr. Sadao to get the P.O.W killed. He assured her that he would send his killers that night and get the man out of his house. The General asked him to open his door that night.

25. What was the result of the general pledge? 3. Why did he forget to keep his promise?

Ans: The General had promised him that he would get the P.O.W killed, but he could not keep it as he was sick most of the time. Due to illness, he forgot to keep his promise.

26. How did Dr. Sadao ensure that the person got there safely?

Ans: When Dr. Sadao saw the man off from his island, he advised him to signal once to get there safely. He received a signal and made sure that the man reached there safely.

27. What were Sadao's strange habits while performing surgery?

Ans: Sadao used to talk to the patients while operating them. When the patient used to cry or moan during the operation, he used to talk to him calling him his friend.

28. What secret plan did the general have about the American soldier who was under Sadao's care?

Ans: The General plans to have the American soldier under Dr. Sadao's care killed by his personal assassins. He also assured the doctor to take out the body.
