1. Why did
Sadao wait for Hana to fall in love?
Ans: Both
Sadao and his wife Hana were Japanese. Sadao met Hana in America where both
were students. Although he is impressed by her, Sadao hesitates to propose to
her until he is sure that Hana is pure in her race because he knows that if she
is not pure Japanese, her father will consider her as his son. Do not like to
keep as wife.
2. Why was
Sadao not sent with the Japanese soldiers who were at war with America?
Ans:
Sadao was not sent with the Japanese troops even when the country was at war.
Being a renowned surgeon, he was much needed by the old general who was under
treatment. In addition, Sadao was inventing a new medicine that was supposed to
completely clean wounds.
3. How
patriotic was Sadao's father?
Ans:
Sadao's father lived a typical Japanese life. He was blind about his country
and loved it all his life. He never used anything made in a foreign country. He
could not even think of a foreign daughter-in-law. He wanted his son to study
abroad so that he could serve for the development of Japan.
4. What was
the superstition of the servants against keeping the American soldier at
Sadao's house?
Ans: The
servants did not like Sadao and Hana helping the American soldier because they
were superstitious. According to him, first the bullet, then the sea and
finally the sharp rocks in the sea tried to kill the soldier but he survived
them all. Now if Sadao helps the man, the bullet, the sea and the rocks will
turn against him and destroy him and his family.
5. Why did
all the servants return? Do you think it was wrong to leave their house?
Ans: All
the servants came back as the P.O.W had left his house. No, they were not at
all wrong in their decision as they loved their country very much. His decision
shows his patriotism towards the country.
6. Why were
all the servants crying before leaving their master's house?
Ans: All
the servants were crying because they were too attached to everyone. Yumi was
fond of children while the gardener had been working there for a long time
since Dr. Sadao's childhood. All of them had spent endless time with Dr. Sadao
and his family.
7. What two
things happened on the seventh day of the prisoner's stay at Dr. Sadao's house?
Ans: The
first thing happened that the P.O.W. Also, a messenger came there whom Hana
thought was a policeman who had come to arrest her husband. But it turned out
that he had been sent by the general because he was ill.
8. Dr. Sadao
as P.O.W. What made you irritable and angry?
Ans: When
Dr. Sadao saw that all the servants had left his house and that Hana had to do
all the household chores, he became irritable and angry with the man. Besides
this, he had to give up all his practices and take care of the children.
9. What was
the most remarkable instruction his American professor Sadao took to his heart?
Ans: Sadao's
anatomy professor used to remind his students that a surgeon's greatest crime
was his poor knowledge of human anatomy. If a surgeon operated on a patient
without full knowledge of the human body, he would be killing the patient.
10. How did
the servants react to Sadao's act of taking the American soldier into the
house?
Ans: The
servants were from the beginning against Sadao's idea of beating, killing, or
treating an American soldier for any reason. He openly expressed his
dissatisfaction and made it clear that Sadao should not deal with American
because Americans are enemies of Japan. When they saw that Sadao was not
yielding to their wishes, the servants left their jobs in Sadao's house amid
great pangs of separation.
11. Why did
Sadao plot to kill the American?
Ans:
Sadao was a compassionate doctor who valued life and considered saving any life
as his prime concern. However, because of this, he admitted the American to his
home - and provided him with all kinds of medical help. Sadao was planning to
kill him because the American had fully recovered and therefore the
doctor-patient relationship had broken down and was the American's enemy.
12. What does
the old general mean by American sentimentality and German brutality? What did
they hope to do by combining the two?
Ans: The
general believed that the Americans were too emotional and the Germans too
cruel. According to him, an ideal doctor should be because he has both these
qualities. The doctor should love the patient on the one hand and be cruel to
his physical pain. By combining these two qualities, the general expected a man
to become an ideal doctor.
13. What
arrangements were made for the safe arrival of the P.O.W.'s on the other
island?
Ans:
Various arrangements were made for their safe arrival. Dr. Sadao arranged for a
boat, some water bottles and some Japanese clothes. Apart from this, he handed
over a flashlight to him and said that if he reaches safely, then signal once
and if the food is over, then signal twice. He wanted to make sure that the
P.O.W. had reached there safely.
14. What did
Dr. Sadao remember while standing on the beach?
Ans:
Standing on the beach, he remembered the behavior of the landlady in whose
house he used to live. Although she was a bit talkative and served him
unhealthy food, she was still helpful as she saved him when he was down with
influenza. Furthermore, he recalled his experience with Americans who thought
they were superior to the Japanese.
15. Write
about Hana's dilemma.
Ans: Hana
could not understand why she and her husband were indecisive about their next
step regarding the prisoner's fate. When she saw a messenger in an official
uniform at her door, she feared that one of the servants might have informed
the police. But the messenger had only come to inform Doctor Sadao that the
general was in pain and wanted to see him immediately. Understanding Hana's
situation, Sadao decides to do something about the soldier.
