KEEPING QUIET
Solved questions for 5 mark each:
(A) LONG
ANSWER:
1. What will
'counting to twelve' and 'standing still' help us to accomplish?
Ans: To
'count to twelve' and 'to be still' for a moment, according to Pablo Neruda, is
essential for quiet introspection and for creating a sense of mutual
understanding among human beings in the busy cycle of life.
A moment of
silence and stillness without the hustle and bustle of modern life would be a
'wonderful moment' creating a strange feeling of being with all the people of
the world. This will help us to know the cause of our suffering and the
emptiness that has filled our lives.
2. Do you
think the poet advocates complete inaction and death?
Ans: By
asking to remain silent and still for a moment, the poet is not advocating
inaction or death. He does not believe in passivity. For him life is a 'moving'
process and therefore he does not want to associate it with death. He asks us
to remain calm and still for just a moment because He wants us to introspect so
that we can realize what life really is. In today's fast-paced lifestyle, we do
not care for our fellowmen and instead run single-mindedly after material
achievements. A moment of silence and stillness will help us understand the
cause of sadness and the void that has filled our lives. Only in quiet
introspection can we feel this emptiness.
3. What
symbol of nature does the poet include to say that there can be life under
apparent stillness?
Ans: In
his poem "Keeping Quiet," Pablo Neruda used the example of Mother
Earth to show that life can exist under apparent stillness. Everything on the
earth appears lifeless in winter. But in reality, life goes on in silence and
in spring we find that what seemed dead in winter is coming to life. Mother Earth
silently nurtures and nurtures life. With the example of the earth the poet
claims that keeping silent is neither death nor inaction. It is necessary to
introspect our activities.
