KEEPING QUIET

Solved questions for 7 mark each:

(A) LONG ANSWER:

1. What does Neruda wish to achieve by maintaining silence?       Exam paper - 2018

Ans: Counting to twelve and being silent for a moment will provide us with an opportunity for quiet introspection. This moment of silence will be a unique moment without the mad rush of modern life and without language-created distinctions when we can for once feel a strange sense of togetherness. This would be the moment when no man would be involved in the destruction of nature through wars or other activities.

The poet hopes that a moment of silence can interrupt our senseless and mad pursuit behind materialistic achievements and make us think about the cause of suffering and the void that has filled our lives. Only in quiet introspection can we feel this emptiness.

2. Explain the following lines:

(a) Let's not speak in any language.

(b) It would be an exotic moment

(c) would put on clean clothes....        Exam paper - 2019

(d) I want no truck with death

(e) now I'll count up to twelve.

Ans: (a) People in this world are divided on the basis of the languages spoken by them. Once we are silent for a moment all differences will disappear and we will be bound by the common thread of humanity.

(b) The poet feels that if all men remain silent for a moment at a time and indulge in introspection, they will experience a 'strange moment' without the mad race of modern life and all together A rare experience to be had.

(c) The poet wants the war-mongers who prepare for war with gas and fire and destroy the world to consider in a moment of silence that their victory will be without survivors. Therefore, the poet wants them to give up wars and cleanse their hearts of hatred and wear clean clothes. Here clean clothes are the symbol of purity of mind.

(d) The poet does not believe in inaction. According to him life is a continuous process and hence he does not want to link it with death or bring it to a dead end.

(e) The poet asks the men to keep quiet and experience the blissful moment of silence which will create a rejuvenation of thoughts when they start counting to twelve.
