NARRATION: DIRECT AND INDIRECT
(A) Change the form of narration in the following sentences:
1. The
teacher told Minakshi that he would like to ask her question. He told her that
he wanted her to tell him how she could do all the sums correctly.
Ans: The
teacher said to Minakshi, "I would like to ask you a question. I want you
to tell me how you can do all the sums correctly."
2. The lady said to the salesman, "What is the price of this Barbie doll?" The salesman said to her, "It is bit expensive. But I can give it to you at a 15 percent discount." Exam paper - 2014
Ans: The
lady asked the salesman about the price of the Barbie doll. The salesman
replied that it was a bit expensive but he could give her at 15 per cent
discount.
3. "Why
do you do this? 'I ask Saheb whom I encounter every morning." "I have
nothing else to do." he mutters.
Ans: I
asked Saheb, whom I encounter every morning, why he did that. He replied that
he had nothing else to do.
4. Ramen
asked Pradip if he could come with him to the library. Ramen replied that he
would be busy that afternoon.
Ans: Ramen
said to Pradip, "Could you come with me to the library?".
"Sorry, I will be busy this afternoon", said Pradip.
5. Gandhi
said to Shukla, "I have to be in Calcutta on such and such a date. Come
and meet me and take me from there."
Ans:
Gandhi told Shukla that he had to be in Calcutta on such and such a date and
so, he should be met and taken from there.
6. I asked
Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn't know.
Ans: I
said to Ranjan. "Where does Neena live?" He said. "I am very sorry;
I don't know about it."
7. "You
must take the dog out," he said with sour venom. "I shall certainly
do nothing of the kind," said the woman.
Ans: He
said with sour venom that the dog must be taken out. To this the woman replied
that she would certainly do nothing of that kind.
8. Aditi
asked Raj if his sister was at home. Raj replied that she wasn't. She had gone
shopping with their mother.
Ans: Aditi
said to Raj, "Is your sister at home?" "No, she is not. She has
gone shopping with our mother", said Raj.
9. "What
is your name?" I asked the girl at the gate. "And where do you
live?"
Ans: I
asked the girl at the gate what her name was and where she lived.
10. He
requested me to sit down for a few minutes. I told him that I would be late for
school.
Ans: He
said to me, "Please sit down for a few minutes." "I will be late
for school", I said.

"What did you do about it?" I asked the man. "Nothing", he
said, "I did absolutely nothing."
Ans: I
asked the man what he did about that. He answered that he did absolutely
nothing.
12. The teacher asked Namita if she had read The Diary of Anne Frank. Anita replied that she hadn't. Exam paper - 2015
Ans: The
teacher said to Namita, "Have you read The Diary of Anne Frank?"
"No teacher, I haven't", said Namita.
13. "How
long do you have to wait for your train?" the woman asked me. "About
an hour," I replied.
Ans: The
woman asked me how long I had to wait for the train. I answered that I had to
wait for about an hour.
14. My mother
asked me if I had posted the letter. I replied to her that I had.
Ans: My
mother said to me, "Have you posted the letter?" "Yes, I have
posted it", I replied.
15. Anil said
to me, "What are you doing here?" "I am swimming." I
replied.
Ans: Anil
asked me what I was doing there. I replied that I was swimming.
16. The
doctor asked the patent know she was that morning. The patient replied that she
still had the pain.
Ans: The
doctor asked the patient, "How are you this morning?” “I still have the
pain", the patient said.
17. "I
want to work for you," I said to Anil. "Can you cook?" Anil
asked me.
Ans: I
told Anil that I wanted to work for him. He asked me if I could cook.
18. The man
in the counter told me that the train would be an hour late. I asked him at
what time it would reach Tinsukia.
Ans: "The
train will be an hour late", the man in the counter said to me. I asked,
"At what time will it reach Tinsukia?"
19. Anita
said to me, "We are going to Thailand next week." I asked her,
"When will you return?"
Ans:
Anita told me that they were going to Thailand next week. I asked her when they
would return.
20. The
teacher told me that I needed to improve my grammar. I replied that I would try
hard.
Ans: The
teacher said to me, "You need to improve your grammar." "I will
try hard, teacher", I said.
21. He said
to me, "I won't be able to complete the work today. Can I come tomorrow
and complete it?"
Ans: He
told me that he would not be able to complete the work that day. He further
asked if he could come the next day and complete it.
22. I asked
her if she liked the film. She replied that she didn't like it at all.
Ans: I
asked her, "Did you like the film?" "No, I did not like it at
all", she said.
21. One day Mukesh told me that he would be a motor mechanic and leave Firozabad. I asked him if he knew anything about cars. Exam paper - 2013, 2014
Ans: One
day Mukesh said to me, "I will become a motor mechanic and leave
Firozabad." "Do you know anything about cars?" I asked.
22. I said to
a group of young men, "Why don't you organize yourselves into a
cooperative?" One of them said to me, "Even if we get organized, we
are the ones who will be hauled up by the police, beaten and dragged to jail
for doing something illegal."
Ans: I
asked a group of young men why not they organize themselves into a cooperative.
One of them replied that even if they get organized, they are the ones who
would be hauled up by the police, beaten and dragged to jail for doing
something illegal.
23. "Where do you go every Sunday?" I asked the girl. She replied, "I go to the church". Exam paper - 2015
Ans: I
asked the girl where she went every Sunday. She replied that she went the
church.
24. The
teacher asked Rumi if she had read the Bible. She replied that she hadn't.
Ans: The
teacher asked Rumi, "Have you read the Bible?" She said, "No, I
haven't.".
25. "How
long do you have to wait for your train?" the woman asked me "About
an hour," I replied.
Ans: The
woman asked me how long I had to wait for my train. I replied that about an
hour.
26. I asked
Ranjan "where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn't know.
Ans: I
said to Ranjan, "Where does Neena live? Ranjan said, "Sorry, I don't
know.
27. The boy
said to the teacher, "Sir, I am weak in English and seek your
advice." "Read the text thoroughly and try to express your ideas in
simple correct English," said the teacher.
Ans: (a)
The boy told his teacher that he was weak in English and sought his advice. The
teacher advised him to read the text thoroughly and to try to express his ideas
in simple correct English.
28. My friend
told me that he was very thirsty and requested me to give him a glass of water.
Ans: My
friend said to me," Please give me a glass of water as I am very
thirsty".
29. The
Speaker said, “I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for giving me a kind hearing.
When I arrived here yesterday I did not believe that I might meet so large a
gathering.”
Ans:- The
Speaker thanked the people for giving him a kind hearing. He also said that
when he reached there a day before, he did not believe that he might meet so
large a gathering.
30. His
mother exclaimed in sorrow that she had not a bit of bread to give him and that
he had eaten up all the provisions she had in the house the previous day.
Ans:- His
mother said, “Alas- I do not have a bit of bread to give you and you have eaten
up all the provisions I had in the house yesterday.”
31. Reena
said to the boy, “What’s the matter? Why are you crying? Be cheerful.”
Ans:- Reena
asks the boy what is the matter and why is he crying and adviced him to be
happy.
32. The customer
inquired if he could get a garden-roller in that shop. The assistant
respectfully replied that he would get it in the hardware department.
Ans:- The
customer asked, "Can I get a garden roller in the store." The
assistant replied respectfully, "You can get it in the hardware
department."
33. Alexander
said to Porus, “How do you desire to be treated?" He answered, "Like
a king”.
Ans:
Alexander asked Porus how he desired to be treated. Porus replied that like a
king.
34. The boys exclaimed in joy that they had all passed the test and that they would celebrate their success the next day. Exam paper - 2020
Ans: The
boy said, “Hurrah! We have all passed the test and we shall all celebrate our
success tomorrow.”
