Ans: Last Saturday I visited my friend Dipak who
stays in Gauhati Commerce College hostel. It is on the R.G.B. Road within the
college campus. The hostel is a two storied building with 30 rooms. Each room
accommodates three students. The kitchen and dining hall are in separate Assam
type building. Dining hall is quite specious and clean. There is open space in
front of the hostel. There is also a common room where the boarders can read
newspapers, watch TV. and play table tennis and carromboards in the afternoon.
The boarders can also play games like volley ball in the adjacent college
grounds. The hostel provides three meals a day besides morning tea and snacks.
There is a superintendent of the hostel who is also a teacher of the college.
He is responsible for maintaining discipline in the hostel. I have found the
atmosphere very congenial for studies.

March 20, 2012: Hardly a day passes without road accident in Guwahati. The
other day a mini-bus with 20 passengers turned turtle killing 3 and injuring
other 17 passengers. Yesterday a school bus collided with a truck coming from
the opposite direction. The truck suddenly swerved sharply to avoid hitting a
scooter and collided with the school bus. One student died on the spot whose
name was Mrinal Das. At least twelve students were injured besides the driver
of the truck. The condition of two students is serious. All the injured are
admitted in Gauhati Medical College Hospital. Of them six students were allowed
to go home after first aid and check-up as their injuries are minor. One of the
seriously injured students whose name is Rajeeb Baruah is put in ICU.

Last year I had
the opportunity to attend the Edufair, 2011, organized by the Assam Tribune (P)
Ltd. at Don Bosco School campus on September 15 and 16. Its objective was to
help the young aspiring minds in fulfilling their academic aspiration and in
choosing their career goals by acquainting themselves to new avenues in various
disciplines. This Edufair was participated by some top universities and
colleges of the country. It was an interactive session where competent people
from various universities and colleges gave information about their
undergraduate and graduate programmes. The aspiring students were given enough
time to interact with them and to get all the answers to their queries. They
explained the requirements and procedures of joining various course besides
supplying them with prospectuses and other literature regarding those courses.
The Edufair started with a seminar in which need of creating an awareness about

Govt Higher Secondary School, Karimganj organized a blood donation camp on the
eve of its Golden Jubilee to collect blood samples to save thousands of lives.
The celebrations began with the felicitation of some of the good-hearted

It seems that the series of continuous plight in Indian Railways is not taking
the name of stopping. In another accident, at least 35 people were killed and
over 250 injured in Sunday's Kamrup Express train accident in Bihar's
Bhagalpur. The train was on its regular journey from Guwahati to Delhi. At around
5.45 pm, 13 coaches of the train derailed. in Bhagalpur, Bihar. The train was
running at a speed of 100 kmph at that time. Local people along with rescue and
medical teams worked tirelessly to help the trapped and injured people from the
derailed coaches. More than 100 ambulances have reached the accident spot. The
railway minister has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Based on a
preliminary inquiry, four people were suspended, three others were sent on
leave and one officer was transferred. The government has announced all
possible financial help for the facilities for the dead and injured.

13: ABC School experienced a Red-Letter Day on June 13. It witnessed the
memorable visit of twenty students from Japan, who visited the school as part
of the cultural exchange programme. A special reception was organized for him
by the school authority and the school's cultural club.
Many dignitaries
were invited to welcome the foreign students. The officer-in-charge of the
Japanese Embassy was invited as the chief guest. He gave the most inspiring
speech first in Japanese and then in English. Our principal delivered the
welcome address. Four students of class IX welcomed the students in Indian
style.
A cultural
program was organized in honor of the students. One student danced solo, the
school choir sang several songs. The students of junior class presented
Japanese folk dance.
The school
captain read an excerpt from the book "Japanese Wife". Overall, it
was a grand event, a true cultural exchange.

Last week
local college students started a campaign on 'Say No to Plastic'. The main
objective of the campaign was to make people aware about the bad effect of
polythene bags on the environment, humans and animals.
The campaign
was led by the Principal of the college. Apart from this, there were many such
teachers who came to give tremendous support to the program. The campaign
carried out several activities. Starting with the principal's speech, he
apprised the students about the harmful effects of using polythene. He
highlighted the ill effects of polythene bags. The principal, along with other
teachers, loved to suggest alternatives to plastic.
Then he swore
an oath to the people that he would not use poly bags.
The students
took out a rally in the city carrying placards with various slogans. They were
enthusiastic and it seemed to be a very successful campaign.
