Ans:- When
Narayan's car was parked in front of the hospital, two cyclists collided with
each other and fell.

(a) What
happened to the series of gowns in the sixteen year long service of the Verger?
Ans:- For
the sixteen years he was a member of this church, he had a series of such
gowns, but he could never throw them away when they were worn out, and the
whole series lay neatly wrapped in brown paper. The bottom drawers of the
wardrobe in her bedroom.
(b) What was
the discovery that had astonished the vicar?
Ans:- The

Babu found it strange that the birds mistook this strange figure for a real
human being and did not harm the crops out of fear.

Babu decides never to take the help of an exorcist as he doubts Abhiram's
innocence based on the exorcist's words and is dismissed from his job.
(g) What were
the two priceless possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs?
Ans:- James
Dillingham Young had two properties that were very dear to him. One was Jim's
gold watch, the watch that had belonged to his father and his grandfather. The
other was Della's hair.
(h) “May be
the hairs of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for
you” – in what context does Della say this to Jim?
Ans:- He
said this because, when Jim heard that Della had cut and sold his hair, Jim
glared at him, thinking that Jim would not appreciate him without his hair.
(i) In what
context does Lynd mention Solomon?
Ans:- Lynd
mentions Solomon in the context of wisdom. He seeks knowledge as eagerly as
Solomon, who was one of the richest, most powerful, and wisest kings in the
Bible.

Pliny the Elder famous?
Ans:- Pliny
the Elder wrote the Natural History, an encyclopaedic work of unequalled
accuracy that was an authority on scientific matters until the Middle Ages.

(a) What was
the Verger's impression about the new vicar?
Ans:- Verger
thought that the priest wanted to control everything in his own way. Verger
regretted his predecessors because the new pastor always wanted to rule every
activity of the church.
(b) What does
make R. K. Narayan fear that he would soon be bankrupt?
Ans:- Frequent
visits to the workshop made him fear that he would soon go bankrupt as he often
had to take his car in for servicing.
(c) Describe,
how the scarecrow gradually turned into a human figure in front of Mriganko
Babu.
Ans:- He
felt that the form of the scarecrow had changed. Both hands were down and he
stood less rigid like a real man. The black pot was small and really looked
like a head. Ahead, the scarecrow limping and walking on two legs was moving
towards Mriganko Babu.
(d) What does
Jim say to Della when she holds out her gift for him on her palm?
Ans:- Then
Della remembers her gift for Jim and gives it to him to cheer him up. but it is
not like that. Jim tells her that he had to sell his watch in order to raise
enough money to buy the comb. Then Jim smiles and says that they should keep
the gift to remind them how much they love each other.
(e) Describe
the circumstances in which Lynd was led to read Epictetus.
Ans:- Robert Lind overhears a conversation between two friends, in which one friend asks the other if he has read Epictetus. Lind, who is looking for a book to become wiser, discovers that among her bookshelves are some works by the philosopher Epictetus. This inspired Lind to read Epictetus.
