Ans: The

Ans: The
clergy praised Albert for his honesty and ability to work, but they ignored his
devoted service and long years of knowledge based on illiteracy. He gave Verger
the option of learning the alphabet within three months, or else he would lose
his job.
(c) What made
Narayan fear, he would soon become bankrupt?
Ans: Frequent
visits to the workshop made him fear that he would soon go bankrupt as he often
had to take his car in for servicing.
(d) Who fell
on Narayan's car when it was parked in front of the hospital?

(a) Narrate
the circumstances under which the verger had to lose his job at St. Peter's.
Ans: Therefore,
as the pastor said, Verger would have to learn to read and write within three
months or leave his office. But Verger refused to accept the offer and
preferred to resign, believing that it was too late to learn. It was under
these circumstances that Verger lost his job at St. Peter's Church.
(b) Why, do
you think, the author, R. K. Narayan, regards himself as a fanatic in the
context of walking?
Ans: Author
R.K. In the context of walking, Narayan considers himself a 'fanatic' as he
believes that the ultimate destiny of man lies in walking and that is why he is
endowed with a pair of legs that require neither petrol nor gear.
(c) What
happened to Abhiram after he left Mriganko Babu?
Ans: Mriganko
Babu's old servant Abhiram was dismissed for stealing a gold watch from
Mriganko Babu's residence. As soon as he lost his job, he became unwell and
never worked again.
(d) Show how
the twist in the tale makes the story of Jim and Della a moral lesson.
Ans: The
twist in the story makes the story of Jim and Della a moral lesson. The narrator
says that the story compares these two 'foolish children' to the sorceress. The
narrator tells us that the magicians were the wise men who invented the art of
Christmas gift-giving. Since he was wise, his gifts must have been wise.
(e) Why does
Robert Lynd end his essay with the phrase, "it was only a dream"?
Ans: He realizes that if he lived in a world where nothing happened, he could emulate Epictetus. But in a world where unpleasant things happened, this is not possible. Therefore, Lynd concludes that the dream of gaining knowledge only by listening or reading a book is just a dream for him.
