THE VERGER
Solved questions for 5 mark each:
(A) LONG
ANSWER:
1. Try to
draw a character sketch of Verger.
Ans:
Verger Albert Edward Foreman was a simple man. He performed his duty with
honesty and dedication. He was rector of St. Peter's Church for sixteen years
and did all the minor and physical duties. He loved his job and had no
complaints about it until a new pastor discovered he could not read and write.
But Verger was a man in his own right. When the priest asked him to learn the
alphabet, failing which he would lose his job. Verger maintains his dignity and
declines the priest's offer. He preferred to resign, believing that it was too late
to learn. He realized that his illiteracy would never interfere with his
duties. Foreman started a tobacco shop and was surprisingly successful. Even
the banker was surprised to see his ability without education. He had no less
than ten shops. In fact, Verger was a strong man who accepted his problems by
becoming a successful businessman. He also did not aspire to social success and
led a simple life, although he had enough money to live a luxurious life. They
realized that it was better for them to remain illiterate. He had little
education but through intelligent observation of the world he had acquired an
abundance of worldly knowledge.
Verger's
practical thinking, dedication, and ability to work hard solidified his
position. These were the qualities Wager wanted in a priest.
2. Describe
the circumstances under which Verger lost his job.
Ans: A
man named Albert Edward Foreman dutifully performed his duties in the church
for sixteen years. On the strength of his dedicated service and hard work, he
had reached the respectable post of Verger. Verger's eligibility was challenged
with the appointment of a new priest. The day after the christening ceremony,
the new priest summoned Verger to the vestry where two churchwardens were
waiting for him. At first the pastor praised Verger's honesty and ability to
work. But then he ignored his many years of dedicated service on the grounds
that Verger could not read and write. The new pastor was surprised to learn
that Verger was illiterate. Albert is shocked but defends himself by saying
that the previous priest had no objection, even that he could manage everything
without education. But the priest was determined. He told Verger that he had no
right to risk an accident caused by Verger's regrettable ignorance. They asked
him if he could not learn. Then Verger split up. The priest gives Verger the
option of learning the alphabet, or else he will lose his job. Even Verger was
determined. He refused to accept the offer and preferred to resign, believing
that it was too late to learn at that level. Therefore, due to lack of
education Verger resigned from his respectable office and thus lost his job.
3. How did
Albert Foreman answer the bank manager's question? What does his answer
indicate?
Ans:
Verger was earning money hand over hand and kept the money in the bank. The
bank manager asked the foreman to invest his money. They told him that for this
he would have to see some papers and sign them. Verger told him that he was
illiterate, he could only write his name and nothing else. Then the manager
asked him what would you do if you were educated. To this question, Verger
replied that in that case he would have been a church verger.
This answer
shows the irony of the situation. The irony of the situation. The manager hoped
that if Albert was educated, he would be a big businessman. While Foreman knew
that in that case, he would not lose his job as verger, he would have been
verger of St Peter's Church in Neville Square. He was expelled from the church
on the grounds of his illiteracy.
