1. How do
fact and fiction interact in Maugham's work?
Ans: Fact
and fiction are so mixed in Maugham's work that one cannot be separated from
the other. The deeply intimate relationship between the imaginary and the real
became a distinctive feature of his work.
2. On what
occasions did Verger use his new gown?
Ans:
Verger used her new gown for funerals and weddings. He used his second best for
christenings and other ceremonies. He wore it with pride as it was the
dignified symbol of his office.
3. What did
Verger think of his official outfit?
Ans: Verger
considered his official dress to be a dignified symbol of his position. Without
it she felt somewhat inadequately dressed.

Ans: On
the day of the christening, Verger complimented the new priest that it was a
great christening. Even when the priest looked at him, the child stopped crying
and made him sit by extending his arm.

Ans: In
the vestry, two church wardens who were elderly men waited on the pastor and
the chaplain.

Ans: Both

Ans: The

Ans: The

Ans: After

Ans:
While walking down the street in search of cigarettes, Albert Edward Foreman
did not find a cigarette. He found it very strange and thought that he could
not be the only man walking down that road and wanted to fag. So he thought of
opening a small shop of tobacco and sweets there.

business did Albert Foreman establish and where?
Ans:
Albert Edward Foreman got into business as a tobacco salesman and news agent.
He established a tobacco and sweets business. He started it from a long street
where there was no tobacco seller.
15. How did
Albert Foreman's wife react to his new venture?
Ans: Albert
Edward Foreman's wife did not like his new venture. According to him it was a
terrible fall after St Peters reached the brink.
