1. How do fact and fiction interact in Maugham's work?

Ans: Fact and fiction are so mixed in Maugham's work that one cannot be separated from the other. The deeply intimate relationship between the imaginary and the real became a distinctive feature of his work.

2. On what occasions did Verger use his new gown?

Ans: Verger used her new gown for funerals and weddings. He used his second best for christenings and other ceremonies. He wore it with pride as it was the dignified symbol of his office.

3. What did Verger think of his official outfit?

Ans: Verger considered his official dress to be a dignified symbol of his position. Without it she felt somewhat inadequately dressed.

4. On the day of the consecration, what did Verger praise the new priest?

Ans: On the day of the christening, Verger complimented the new priest that it was a great christening. Even when the priest looked at him, the child stopped crying and made him sit by extending his arm.

5. Who was waiting for the Verger and the Pastor in the vestry?

Ans: In the vestry, two church wardens who were elderly men waited on the pastor and the chaplain.

6. How long had the two church wardens been at St Peter's?

Ans: Both wardens of the church were there almost if Albert Edward Verger was there, that is, they were there for the last sixteen years.

7. Who and where did the beautiful refectory table in the church come from?

Ans: The old priest brought the beautiful refectory table to the church. He brought it from Italy.

8. What were the expressions on the faces of both the warden and the priest of the church?

Ans: The priest's red face had an expression of resolute gentleness, while the two-faced church warden had an expression of slight annoyance.

9. Where did Verger go after meeting the two wardens of the church?

Ans: After his meeting with the two church wardens, Albert Edward slowly walked back into the vestry and hung up his gown. Then he walked down the aisle and closed the church door behind him. But in his view, he chose the wrong path.

10. How much time is given to Verger to learn his letters?

Ans: The priest gave the verger three months to learn his letters and if at the end of that time he could not read and write, he would lose his position as verger...

11. Why did Albert Foreman not want to go back to domestic service?

Ans: Albert Foreman did not want to return to domestic service as he had been his boss for so many years and had run St Peter's Neville Square as a verger. Therefore, he cannot humiliate himself by going back to domestic service.

12. What was Albert Foreman looking for on the road he accidentally walked on? did he find it there?

Ans: Albert Edward Foreman was on the street looking for a store where he could buy a packet of Gold Flakes. No, he did not find it there.

13. When Albert Foreman was walking down the street looking for cigarettes, what thought came to his mind?

Ans: While walking down the street in search of cigarettes, Albert Edward Foreman did not find a cigarette. He found it very strange and thought that he could not be the only man walking down that road and wanted to fag. So he thought of opening a small shop of tobacco and sweets there.

14. Which business did Albert Foreman establish and where?

Ans: Albert Edward Foreman got into business as a tobacco salesman and news agent. He established a tobacco and sweets business. He started it from a long street where there was no tobacco seller.

15. How did Albert Foreman's wife react to his new venture?

Ans: Albert Edward Foreman's wife did not like his new venture. According to him it was a terrible fall after St Peters reached the brink.
