(A) LONG ANSWER:

1. How did Verger feel after he offered his resignation at St Peter's?

Ans: Verger was very sad after offering his resignation at St Peter's but there was no sign of sadness on his face. With his usual humility he performed his last duties in the church. Yet, he could not maintain the unaffected dignity with which he had borne his blow. His lips started trembling. He walked slowly; his heart heavy. Immersed in his sad thoughts, he did not follow the path that would lead him home. He took a wrong turn. He did not know what he should do with himself after resigning from the job. He had absolutely no desire to be a domestic servant because for many years he had been his own master. In fact, Verger was troubled by questions related to his existence and he never thought that he would be troubled by such questions. He wanted his sermon to be delivered by a clergyman after his death for his long faithful service. But it became futile as he lost his job due to illiteracy. He took a deep breath and wanted to smoke a cigarette to comfort himself and come out of the shock.

2. Does Verger regret not being able to read and write? Has it caused any kind of hindrance in their life?

Ans: No, Verger did not regret being unable to read and write. This did not create any kind of hindrance in his life. He did his work with great dedication and respect. Though he was illiterate, his illiteracy never came in the way of the successful completion of his duty. Whenever he wanted to write, his wife also helped him, she used to write for him. He could handle everything well even without education. He firmly declined the offer to learn on the grounds that he was too old a dog to learn new tricks. His illiteracy did not deter him as he found a new way even after losing his job. With his hard work, honesty and dedication, he established himself in business as a tobacco salesman and news agent. Although Verger did not have a formal education, he was worldly wise. This helped him to get success.

3. How successful was Albert Foreman's business? How did he expand it?

Ans: Albert Foreman got into trouble after losing his job at the church for being illiterate. But he could find a way. When he was no longer an alcoholic, he lost no time in setting up business as a tobacco salesman and news agent. He started with a small shop and within a year he did a good business. Then he took another shop and appointed a manager in it. Eventually, he was able to establish ten tobacco shops within ten years.

Albert Edward started his business as a tobacco seller from a small shop. He did very well in business. Within a year, he had moved to another store and hired a manager. He opens these shops in a long street where there was no tobacco seller. It was also successful. Then he thought that if he could run two, he could run half a dozen, so he began to walk the streets of London, and whenever he found a long street without a tobacco shop or rent-shop, he Would have gone Within ten years he had bought at least ten shops and was earning a living. In this way, on the strength of his practical thinking, ability to work hard and dedication, he expanded his business.

4. Why was the bank manager surprised? Why did this seem 'the most extraordinary thing he had ever heard'?

Ans: The bank manager was surprised to learn that Albert Edward Foreman, a tobacco salesman, had amassed a fortune of thirty thousand pounds uneducated. He could never imagine that an illiterate man would earn such a huge amount. He was amazed at what Albert Foreman accomplished without the ability to read and write.

It was the most extraordinary thing the manager had ever heard, because even though the foreman was illiterate, he had built a business empire and made money together. The manager at the bank asked the foreman to invest his money but the foreman was reluctant. The bank manager assured him of gold securities. The bank manager told him that he would do everything for him. The foreman only had to sign. But the foreman was upset because he could not read the papers. Also, being illiterate, he may not even know what he is signing. So, he told the manager that he could not read and write, when the manager heard this, he was stunned, he found it extraordinary that an illiterate man could amass such a huge wealth. The manager was surprised to see his ability without education.

5. What positive ideas emerge in the story 'The Verger'?

Ans: In the story 'The Verger' Somerset Maugham describes the circumstances that can bring about a change in one's life. Albert Edward Foreman, Verger of St Peter's Neville Square, lost his job due to illiteracy. He had risen to the respectable position of Verger on the strength of his hard work and dedicated service. Although he lost his job, he established himself as a tobacco salesman and amassed great wealth. The story of how practical thinking, dedication and hard work helps to strengthen one's position. Verger was a strong man who accepted his problem and established a business empire. In crisis, a person should not give up but should work hard with dedication. A little learning but a wealth of textual knowledge gained through intelligent observation of the world can pave the way to success.
