(a) What are the two major branches of geography?
Ans:- Physical geography and human
geography are two major branches of geography. Physical geography focuses on
the natural aspects of the Earth's surface, while human geography studies the
interactions between people and their environment.
(b) Mention any two factors affecting salinity of ocean water.
Ans:- Ocean salinity is affected by many
factors. These are evaporation, rainfall, river water flow, ocean currents,
atmospheric pressure, wind direction and global warming. The average salinity
of oceans and seas is 35%.
(c) Name two foreign countries sharing common boundaries with Assam.
Ans:- The state shares borders with
Bhutan and Bangladesh. Assam is a state in northeastern India located south of
the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys.
(d) Which two glaciers are the sources of the rivers Ganga and
Yamuna?
Ans:- Yamuna originates from Yamunotri
Glacier and Ganga originates from Gangotri Glacier, both glaciers are located
in the Himalayas.
(e) Name two different expressions of humidity.
Ans:- Humidity has two different manifestations:-
(i) Absolute humidity: The amount of
water vapor in 1 cubic meter. Absolute humidity of air is the absolute humidity
of the air.
(ii) Relative humidity: The amount of
water vapor present in the air can be expressed as a percentage of the amount
required for saturation at the same temperature and same volume. It is
expressed in percentage.
(f) Mention any two conditions necessary for the occurrence of
temperature inversion.
Ans:- Two conditions are necessary for the occurrence of temperature
inversion:-
(i) Long winter nights: Heat loss by
terrestrial radiation from the ground surface during the night may exceed the
amount of incoming solar radiation.
(ii) Cloudless and clear sky: Heat loss
through terrestrial radiation occurs more rapidly than without interruption.
