2. Give short answers of the following
(any eight): 2x8=16
(a) Mention the names of two plates as mentioned in the theory of
Plate Tectonics.
Ans:- The Pacific Plate, North American
Plate.
(b) Mention any two groups of weathering processes.
Ans:- Weathering is a long, gradual
process that occurs continuously on the Earth's surface.
Weathering is classified into two types: Mechanical and Chemical.
(i) Mechanical weathering is the process through which external
factors, such as water freezing in rock cracks, break rocks into smaller
pieces.
(ii) Chemical weathering occurs when rock interacts with rain, water
and the environment, destroying chemical and mineral links and forming new
minerals.
(c) Write the names of the lowermost and the uppermost layers of the
earth's atmosphere.
Ans:- Troposphere. Almost all weather
occurs in this region, called the lower atmosphere. The troposphere begins at
the Earth's surface, but the height of the troposphere varies.
The uppermost layer of the earth is called the earth's crust. It is
approximately 35 km on the continental mass and 5 km at sea level.
(d) Mention two types of moraine deposits in glacial valleys.
Ans:- (i) Lateral moraines: Low peaks on
each side of the glacier are formed mainly by rocks falling from the valley
walls.
(ii) Medial Moraine: When two valley glaciers merge and lateral
moraines join together, a ridge is formed in the middle of the glacier.
(e) Mention two factors which cause variations in insolation.
Ans:- Factors causing variation in insolation:
(i) The angle of inclination of the Earth.
(ii) Revolution of the earth.
(f) Name two factors affecting the velocity and direction of wind.
Ans:- There are two factors affecting the speed and direction of
wind:-
(i) Pressure gradient force: The
difference in atmospheric pressure produces a force. The rate of change of
pressure with respect to distance is known as the pressure gradient.
(ii) Friction force: It affects the
movement of air. Friction is maximum on the surface and minimum on the sea
surface.
