1. Answer any one of the following questions in about 40-60 words. 2
(a) Every
child dreams to follow in the footsteps of his / her role model. Who was young
Gawaskar’s mentor and guide during childhood. What lessons of life did he learn
from him? (See Lesson-1)
Ans:-
Sunil Gavaskar's childhood mentor and guide was his uncle Madhav Mantri, who
played four official Test matches for India. Gavaskar used to admire the Indian
team's pullovers at his uncle's home and once asked him if he could have one
too, but his uncle told him that you have to work hard and earn the
"colours of India".
Gavaskar took
his uncle's words very seriously and decided to win instead of begging. He
learned the important lesson that there is no shortcut to success, and one must
work hard to achieve one's goals. This guidance from his uncle inspired
Gavaskar to strive for excellence and make his place in the Indian cricket team
through his ability and dedication.
(b) How has
the western world benefited from the use of wind energy? How can India optimally
tap this powerful natural resource? (See Lesson-5)
Ans:- The
Western world has benefited from wind energy in several ways:-
(i) Low
carbon emissions: Wind energy is a clean, renewable energy source that does
not produce any greenhouse gas emissions. This has helped Western countries
reduce their carbon footprint and meet climate change mitigation goals.
(ii) Job
creation: The wind energy industry has created thousands of well-paying
jobs in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance across the Western world.
For example, the US wind industry employs over 125,000 people.
(iii)
Economic growth: Wind energy has attracted significant investment and added
billions of dollars to the economies of Western countries. In the US, new wind
projects added $20 billion to the economy in 2022.
(iv) Energy
Security: Wind energy, being a domestic resource, has helped reduce Western
countries’ dependence on imported fossil fuels, thereby improving their energy
security.
(v) Community
Benefits: Wind projects provide tax revenues and land lease payments, which
benefit local communities, allowing them to invest in infrastructure, schools
and other public services.
India can
optimize its use of wind energy in the following ways:-
(i)
Expanding Wind Power Capacity: India has a huge wind power potential,
estimated at over 302 GW at a 100 m hub height. However, the current installed
capacity is only around 41 GW. India should aggressively expand its wind power
capacity to harness this abundant natural resource.
(ii)
Improving Grid Integration: Integrating large-scale wind power into the
grid has been a challenge in India due to the intermittent nature of wind.
India should invest in grid modernization, energy storage and flexible generation
to better integrate wind power.
(iii)
Promote offshore wind: India has a long coastline that is suitable for
offshore wind development. Offshore wind has a higher capacity factor and less
visual impact than onshore. India should focus on developing its offshore wind
potential.
(iv)
Encourage community participation: India should involve local communities
in wind energy project planning and development to address land use, wildlife
and aesthetic concerns. This will help build public acceptance for wind energy.
(v) Provide
policy support: Stable, long-term policies and incentives for wind energy,
such as feed-in tariffs, renewable energy targets and tax benefits, can further
drive investment and growth in the sector.
By optimally
utilising its vast wind energy resources through these measures, India can
reap significant economic, environmental and social benefits similar to those
experienced in the Western world.

(a) ‘The
Banyan Tree is enormous and impressive in sight and benefit’. Justify this statement
in the context of the chapter. (See Lesson-22)
Ans:- The
banyan tree is enormous and impressive both in appearance and benefits, as
justified in the context of the chapter. The banyan tree is described as a
majestic and awe-inspiring sight, with its huge trunk and spreading branches
providing shade and shelter to many creatures. Apart from its physical
grandeur, the banyan tree also greatly benefits the surrounding ecosystem. It
serves as a habitat for many birds, insects and other small creatures,
providing them with food and a safe haven. The tree's deep roots also help
stabilize soil and prevent erosion, while its leaves and fruits are used by
local communities for various purposes, such as medicine and food. Overall, the
banyan tree's impressive size, longevity and multifaceted benefits make it a
truly remarkable and valuable part of the natural landscape.
(b)
Gawaskar’s uncle and Bholi’s teacher are shining examples of how a child can be
groomed to overcome challenges and lead a rewarding life. Describe the role played
by Bholi’s teacher that helped her overcome the challenges she faced from her
family and the society. (See Lesson-25)
Ans:-
Bholi's teacher played a key role in transforming her from a timid, stuttering
girl to a confident young woman who stood up for herself. The teacher's
compassion, encouragement, and belief in Bholi's ability helped her overcome
the challenges she faced from her family and society. The teacher treated Bholi
with kindness and respect, whereas at home she faced indifferent behavior. She
patiently encouraged Bholi to speak without fear despite her stutter and
praised her efforts, which boosted Bholi's confidence. The teacher introduced Bholi
to books and made studying fun, which made her feel valued and loved. Over
time, the teacher's constant support and positive reinforcement helped Bholi
gain confidence, learn to speak clearly, and enjoy school. She became more
sociable and began to believe in herself. The education and skills Bholi gained
opened up opportunities for her future. When Bholi's parents wanted to marry
her off to an old man who demanded dowry, Bholi refused, standing up for her
self-esteem and rights. This courageous decision was possible because of the
confidence and values instilled in her by her teacher.
Bholi's
transformation from a timid girl to a confident woman who can challenge social
prejudices is a testament to the power of compassionate teaching to help
children overcome adversity. Her story emphasizes the transformative role of
education and the ability of a caring teacher to change the course of a child's
life.

(a) On January
16, 2003, Riyaz’s life changed dramatically forever. Describe in your own words
the incident that occurred that day. What qualities of his character are highlighted
