(a) Who authored the book, On the Origin of Species?

(b) From which language is the word 'Mesopotamia' derived?

Ans:- The word "Mesopotamia" is derived from ancient Greek.

(c) What were 'Maqamat'?

Ans:- Maqamat are a collection of short stories written in Arabic that are known for their literary complexity.

(d) Who was the first II-Khanid ruler to convert to Islam?

Ans:- Mahmud Ghazan (1271-1304) was the first Il-Khanid ruler to embrace Islam. He ruled the Ilkhanate of the Mongol Empire in Iran from 1295 to 1304.

(e) Who was Tacitus?

Ans:- Tacitus was a Roman orator and public official.

(f) Who paid the 'Baj' tax?

Ans:- Traders paid the Baz tax for this very purpose, and thus they acknowledged the authority of the Mongol Khan.

(g) Name the famous work of Marc Bloch.

Ans:- Marc Bloch was a French historian and resistance leader. His major works include:-

The Royal Touch (1924), French Rural History (1931), and Feudal Society (1939).

Ans:- The French Revolution started in 1789.

(i) Name the first novel of the world.

Ans:- The world’s first novel is believed to be The Tale of Genji, written in 11th century Japan by a woman we know only as Murasaki Shikibu.

(j) In which year was the Battle of Panipat fought?

Ans:- The First Battle of Panipat was fought on 21 April 1526 in North India.

(k) Who built the first iron bridge in the world?

Ans:- Abraham Darby III built the world's first iron bridge in 1779.

(l) Who invented the spinning jenny?

Ans:- James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny in England in 1764-1765.

(m) When was Sydney founded?

Ans:- Sydney was founded in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales.

(n) Who wrote The Travels?

Ans:- The book titled The Travels was written by French traveler and physician Francois Bernier.

2. Answer the following questions in brief (any twelve): 2x12=24

(a) What is fossil?

Ans:- Fossils are the preserved remains of plants and animals that lived in the past. They may be the actual remains of an organism, or they may be traces or imprints of an organism.

(b) Write any two characteristics of hominids.

Ans:- The two main characteristics of hominids are: bipedalism (walking upright on two legs) and a larger brain than other primates, allowing for increased cognitive abilities and tool use.

(c) What is Islamic calendar?

Ans:- The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims to mark religious events and holidays. This calendar is based on the phases of the moon and is used in many Muslim countries.

(d) Who composed the book Al-Qanun Fil Tibb (Canon of Medicine)? How many names of drugs did it contain?

Ans:- Ibn Sina (980-1037), also known as Avicenna, wrote Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (Canon of Medicine). This book is a medical encyclopedia that includes a long list of medicines and treatments for various diseases.

(e) Name two famous monasteries established by St. Benedict.

Ans:- St. Benedict of Nursia founded two famous monasteries in Italy and Burgundy.

(f) Write any two characteristics of feudal society of France.

Ans:- The feudal society in France had two major characteristics:-

(i) Vassal System: This system involved a hierarchical relationship, where a lord would grant land (fief) to a vassal in return for military service and loyalty. This created a chain of loyalty, with lower-level vassals pledging loyalty to their immediate lord, who in turn pledged loyalty to a higher lord, ultimately reaching the king.

(ii) Three Orders: Feudal society in France was divided into three social classes: the clergy (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), and the peasantry (Third Estate). Each order had specific rights and obligations within the system, with the nobility having significant power due to land ownership and military prowess.

(g) Write two duties of monks.
