(MY MOTHER AT SIXTY-SIX)
CHAPTER SUMMARY
This poem is an
expression of the personal experience of the poetess in which she describes
about her old mother. Kamala Das has a unique place among Indians writing in
English, her poems have depth of emotions, sensations, passion, and realistic
expressions related to our daily life. In this poem she expresses her
experiences as a daughter as well as a person. She talks about a very common
and very common contradictory situation of human life, we realize that this
ordinary experience becomes really special in some moments of our life, as we
often take for granted some people. Feel. But they are not successful in
expressing it. The poet describes a Friday morning when she was driving from
her parents' house to Cochin airport. He says that his mother was sitting near
him in the car. On the way, the poetess noticed her mother who was sixty-six
years old at that time. The mother was in a drowsy state and her mouth was
open. What the daughter saw was that the mother looked like a dead person at
that time with her pale face and sleeping state. Suddenly the poetess realized
that her mother would not live much longer, but since this thought was very
painful for her, she tried to drive this feeling away from her mind. She
started looking at the beautiful green trees on the road which seemed to be
moving. She could see small children running here and there happily.
When the poet reached the airport
and passed through the security check, she saw her mother standing outside at
some distance. He once again looked at his mother's pale face and saw whiteness
in it. She compares this whiteness of her mother's pale face to the face of the
moon at the end of winter. The poetess feels an old and familiar pain inside
herself and finds it troublesome to bear. He remembers that even in his
childhood, whenever any fear overcame him, he used to feel similar pain. He
only experienced and felt these things but did not say anything to his mother
about his feelings. She simply said, “See you soon, Amma.” She was speechless
and sad, but kept smiling and smiling. It seems as if he tried to hide his
tears behind his smile.
